How do I get an account for RUWireless Secure?
Any Rutgers University student, faculty, staff, guest, retiree, or professor emeritus with a valid NetID can log into RUWireless Secure. If you do not have a Rutgers NetID you may use RUWireless or a current staff or faculty member can create a temporary login for you using RGAMS.
I'm trying to use RUWireless Secure but I'm having trouble getting the installer to work. Who can help me with this?

Why am I not able to send e-mail from RUWireless?
Sending email is possible, though restricted. Most email clients send mail using the SMTP protocol. Due to a large increase of email viruses that spread using SMTP, RUWireless prevents its users from connecting to non-Rutgers SMTP email servers (ports 25 and 465). Users are still able to send email through webmail services or through trusted Rutgers SMTP servers such as smtp.rutgers.edu or smtp.gmail.com.
I can connect to RUWireless, but I am not redirected to the login page. Is there another way to login?
If you are in a RUWireless coverage area and connected to RUWireless, then you should get redirected when you attempt to load any Rutgers or external webpage. If you do not get redirected, you should try to refresh your browser after 45 seconds. In some cases when you first connected to a wireless network, multiple applications and/or browser extensions can try to update all at once, making our system think your computer is infected with a virus or spyware. This will cause you to be put in a penalty role for 30 seconds. After those 30 seconds, you will be released from this role. Restarting your browser will not help fix this problem. Restarting your browser will just cause all of your extensions to be reloaded thus causing the same problem again.
In other cases, the webpage you are trying to reach might not be redirectable. We are unable to redirect all SSL encrypted pages (https) and a few other pages. So try to load another webpage such as cnn.com, weather.com, nytimes.com, foxnews.com.
I can't find configuration instructions for my device. Will it work on RUWireless?
Why is the wireless connection slower than a wired connection?
There are several reasons why the wireless connection is slower than a wired connection. First, the technology itself is slower than most wired connections. Second, RUWireless uses a QoS bandwidth limitation to provide a fair level of service to all users. Without it, it would be possible for a single user to sit very close to an access point and "hog" all of the bandwidth. Third, the amount of bandwidth you get is somewhat determined by how strong your signal is, so even though the RUWireless team has made every effort to provide clear strong signals in marked coverage areas, there still remains the possibility of outside interference such as microwaves and cordless phones which can drastically affect bandwidth.
What wireless standards does RUWireless support?
RUWireless access points support the 802.11a, 802.11ac, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards.
Are Linux operating systems supported on RUWireless?
Yes, but Linux devices must manually configure.
Should I install a firewall or turn on my built-in firewall to protect my laptop?
It is relatively easy to use the built-in firewalls in Windows and macOS and they do provide valuable protection against other wireless hosts using RUWireless. Please note that the wireless gateways that control your access to RUWireless also act as powerful firewalls to protect you against hosts on the other side of the gateway.
How do I get RUWireless installed in my department/building?

How do I access the RUWireless Guest Account Management System?
You can access RGAMS through its website. This will allow a faculty or staff member to create temporary accounts that last for a maximum of 7 days. For accounts that last longer than 7 days, or to create bulk RUWireless Guest accounts, you can contact the Help Desk at 833-OIT-HELP (833-648-4357) or send a request to email@example.com.
