Before a computer can connect to RUWireless you must have a properly installed 802.11b wireless network card. Any card bearing the Wi-Fi logo should work perfectly with RUWireless. The actual installation of the card will differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and is beyond the scope of this document. Following the directions that come with the card is strongly recommended. The default settings for most cards are all that is needed to connect to RUWireless. However, for those cards that require further configuration these specifics should be helpful.

SSID or ESSIDRUWireless (case sensitive)
WEP encryptionOff or Disabled
ChannelAUTO
802.1X AuthenticationOff or Disabled
Data RateAuto

Note: If you use your computer on another wireless network you should record all settings before changing them, so they can be restored for later use.

Once the wireless network card is installed and configured you need to configure the cards network settings.

Click Start => Settings => Control Panel

Double-click the "Network and Dial-up Connections" icon.

Now right-click the connection for your wireless PC card (pausing with your mouse pointer over the connection will cause the name of the card to appear). Select "Rename" and change the name of the card to Wireless Network Connection

Now double-click the renamed connection.

Double-click the "Properties" button.

Double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

Click both "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Click "OK" in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. If you have a tab called "Sharing" in the main properties window, you must click on it, otherwise skip this step. In the "Sharing" tab you must un-check the box next to "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection"

Click "OK" in the main Properties window. Close the Status window. Close the Network and Dial-up Connections window by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner.

At this point your computer is ready to use RUWireless without encryption. For a login demonstration please click here.
