These instructions are for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.
Service Pack 2 introduced changes to wireless configuration that alters the step-by-step instructions.
If you know that you do not have Service Pack 2, please follow the
Windows XP instructions.
If unsure, open
Control Panel and click the
Help menu and choose
About Windows. Look at the Windows version on the second line. If the line does not contain "Service Pack 2" follow the
Windows XP instructions. Otherwise, follow the instructions below.
Connecting to RUWireless using Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP introduced significant changes in the way wireless networking
is configured on that operating system. These instructions are for setting up a
Windows XP Service Pack 2 system to work with RUWireless using SP2's Wireless Zero Config.
Before you can connect, your computer needs a properly installed wireless card that supports 802.11b.
The actual installation of the card is outside the scope of this document, but we recommend following
the instructions that came with the card.
If you have your computer set up for another wireless network, you should write down your existing
settings before changing them for RUWireless.
Open the Control Panel

Click on the
Start button in the lower left and select
Control Panel.
Open the Network and Internet Connections group

Click on the
Network and Internet Connection icon.
Open the Network Connections control panel

Click on the
Network Connections icon.
Open Wireless Zero Config for your wireless card

Find your wireless card in the list and double click its icon.
Connect to RUWireless

Choose
RUWireless from the list of networks and click
Connect.
Don't see this screen? You probably don't have Service Pack 2 installed which added this screen to Windows XP. Follow the normal
Windows XP instructions instead.
Accept unsecured connection

Windows may warn you that RUWireless is an insecure network with this dialog box. Click
Connect Anyway.
You are connected to RUWireless

Once your computer connects to RUWireless, the entry will read Connected. If this
happens successfully, you are ready to log in. Simply open a web browser and the login
page will appear. For a demonstration on the log in page,

If the login page does not display, also try these steps:
Change advanced settings

Click on
Change advanced settings in the left panel of the
Wireless Network Connection window.
Open TCP/IP Properties

Select
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click
Properties.
Configure DHCP

Ensure that
Obtain an IP address automatically and
Obtain DNS server address automatically are set and click OK.

Printing to the Computer Labs
Users of RUWireless and RUWired are able to print to campus computer labs. This process requires a one-time software installation. Once installed, the user can print directly to any* campus lab and pick up the printed document using the standard procedure of swiping his or her ID card at the print release station.
