Before a computer can connect to RUWireless you must have a properly installed 802.11b wireless network card. Any card bearing the Wi-Fi logo should work perfectly with RUWireless. The actual installation of the card will differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and is beyond the scope of this document. Following the directions that come with the card is strongly recommended. The default settings for most cards are all that is needed to connect to RUWireless. However, for those cards that require further configuration these specifics should be helpful.
| SSID or ESSID | RUWireless (case sensitive)
|
| WEP encryption | Off or Disabled
|
| Channel | AUTO
|
| 802.1X Authentication | Off or Disabled
|
| Data Rate | Auto
|
Note: If you use your computer on another wireless network you should record all settings before changing them, so they can be restored for later use.
Once the wireless network card is installed and configured you need to configure the cards network settings.
Click Start => Settings => Control Panel.

In the Control Panel double-click the "Network" icon.

In the window that opens, double-click the item that reads "TCP/IP -> XXXXX", where XXXXX is the name of your wireless PC card.

Choose the "IP Address" tab and select "Obtain IP address automatically"

Choose the "Gateway" tab, if anything is listed under installed gateways, select it and click "Remove"

Choose the "DNS Configuration" tab and select "Disable DNS". Click "OK".

Click OK in the "Network" window

You will be prompted to restart your computer, select "Yes".
